Child Find: locating, evaluating and identifying students with suspected disabilities

Children who are suspected of having a disability can be evaluated free of charge by Pinnacles Prep School District. Each referral is handled on an individual basis. Child find consists of a comprehensive look at your child’s development in the areas of communication development, cognitive development, motor development, social and/or emotional development, and adaptive development. 

The process includes interviews with the primary caregiver, sharing of medical and family history, observation and screening of any areas of concern.

What is a Child Find?

The purpose of our child find is to identify children who are incoming Pinnacles Prep scholars who may have a disability and be in need of special education services.

 How Does a Child Find Work?

Any concerned individual may contact the Pinnacles Prep School District Special Education Department at 509-888-6464 or email shannen@pinnaclesprep.org  to make a referral or request a screening appointment.

Why is Child Find Important?

It helps the child and the family plan appropriate services and links families to services for students meeting eligibility requirements in the following disability areas:

  • Hearing Impairment 

  • Deaf-Blindness 

  • Mental Retardation 

  • Multiple Disabilities 

  • Orthopedic Impairment

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Other Health Impairment

  • Developmental Delay

  • Emotional Disturbance

  • Speech and Language Impairment

  • Visual Impairment

  • Specific Learning Disabilities

  • Autism

Areas of Development

Are you concerned about your child compared to same-aged peers?  Do you feel that your child may need special help to succeed in school

COMMUNICATION

  •  Is your child speaking?

  •  Is your child easily understood?

  • Do you feel like your child understands you when you speak to him/her?

COGNITION

  • Is your child able to stay on task for at least an hour?

  • Is your child able to  understand things from different points of view?

  • Is your child able to use problem solving and thinking skills?

FINE & GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT 

  • Does your child perform physical activity similar to other children such as running, skipping or throwing a ball?

  • Is your child unusually clumsy or uncoordinated?

  •  Is your child able to manipulate small objects similar to other children his/her own age?

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL

  • Is your child establishing friendships?

  • Does your child overreact to simple problems?

ADAPTIVE/BEHAVIOR

  • Is your child able to feed, clothe, and toilet his/herself?

  • Does your child behave safely?
